Best Time to Visit Tanzania
Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to see and experience. From the iconic Great Migration to lush green landscapes, each season offers something unique.
Dry Season (June to October)
This is the most popular time to visit Tanzania and is considered the best for general wildlife viewing. The weather is dry and sunny, with minimal rainfall and lower humidity. Animals gather around waterholes and rivers, making them easier to spot. This is also the peak period for the Serengeti’s Mara River crossings (mid-July to October), and a great time to visit Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and the southern parks like Ruaha.
Green Season (November to March)
Also known as the “secret season,” the green season is marked by short rains in November and lush landscapes that follow. It’s a fantastic time for birdwatching, with migratory species arriving from Europe and Asia. From late December to March, the Southern Serengeti becomes the stage for the calving season — when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth, attracting predators and offering dramatic wildlife encounters. Fewer tourists mean a more exclusive safari experience.
Long Rainy Season (April to May)
These months bring heavier rainfall, making some roads inaccessible, especially in remote parks. However, the landscapes are at their most vibrant, and accommodation prices are often lower. This is a quiet time for tourism, ideal for photographers and those seeking solitude. Some lodges and camps may close temporarily during this time.
Month-by-Month Safari Highlights
January – March: Calving season in Ndutu area (Southern Serengeti); excellent predator action and green scenery.
April – May: Long rains; lush landscapes; some camps close; low visitor numbers.
June – Early July: Dry season begins; excellent game viewing; Grumeti River crossings.
Mid-July – October: Peak safari season; Mara River crossings in Northern Serengeti; great for big cats.
November – December: Short rains; fewer crowds; amazing birdlife; start of migration southward.
