Entry & Visa Requirements for Tanzania

Planning your trip to Tanzania? Here’s everything you need to know to ensure a smooth arrival and entry into the country.

Visa Requirements

Most international travelers require a visa to enter Tanzania. You can obtain this in one of two ways:

1. Online eVisa Application

  • Visit the official Tanzania Immigration eVisa portal: https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/

  • Submit your application with a scanned passport, photo, travel itinerary, and payment.

  • Processing usually takes 5–10 working days.

  • Once approved, print the eVisa approval notice and present it upon arrival.

2. Visa on Arrival

  • Available at major entry points including Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), and border crossings.

  • Visa fees must be paid in USD, and exact change is recommended.

  • Recommended for travelers from countries not eligible for online visas.

Visa Fees

  • Single Entry Tourist Visa: $50 USD (most nationalities)

  • Multiple Entry Visa: $100 USD (mostly for US citizens)

  • Transit Visa: $30 USD (valid for 7 days)

  • East Africa Tourist Visa: $100 USD (covers Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda – not valid for Tanzania)

Visa-Exempt Countries

Citizens of a few countries (e.g. Kenya, Uganda, Namibia) do not require a visa for short stays. See the official immigration site for the latest exemption list.

Passport Requirements

  • Your passport must be valid for at least six (6) months beyond your intended departure from Tanzania.

  • You must have at least one blank page for visa stamps.

  • If you hold dual nationality, ensure you enter and exit Tanzania on the same passport.

Health & Vaccination Requirements

Yellow Fever Certificate

  • Required if you are arriving from (or transiting through) a country where Yellow Fever is endemic.

  • If required, the certificate must be presented upon arrival.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A & B

  • Typhoid

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria

  • Rabies (for extended travel or rural visits)

  • Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for most parts of Tanzania. Consult your travel health provider.

COVID-19 Travel Policies

  • As of now, COVID-19 vaccination is not mandatory for entry.

  • Travelers may be subject to screening and should stay updated via the Ministry of Health or WHO for the latest updates.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend that all travelers purchase comprehensive travel and medical insurance prior to arrival. This should include coverage for:

  • Emergency medical care

  • Trip cancellation or interruption

  • Theft or loss of belongings

  • Emergency evacuation

Arrival in Tanzania

Upon arrival at the airport or land border:

  • Have your passport, visa or approval letter, and yellow fever certificate (if applicable) ready for inspection.

  • You may be asked to provide proof of onward travel and accommodation.

  • Customs officers may ask questions regarding the purpose of your trip. A copy of your safari booking confirmation is useful.
