The Great Wildebeest Migration

The Great Migration is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on the planet. Each year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, journey across the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing grounds.

What is the Migration?
The migration is a continuous, circular movement of wildlife between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara, driven by rainfall and the growth of new grass. This natural phenomenon is not just about movement—it’s about life, birth, survival, and dramatic predator encounters.

Migration Route and Timeline

Late December to Early March – Calving Season (Southern Serengeti/Ndutu)
This period marks the birthing season, with over 500,000 calves born in just a few weeks. The lush Ndutu plains offer excellent grazing, attracting large herds. This is also prime time for predator action, as lions, hyenas, and cheetahs prey on the vulnerable young.

April to May – Movement Towards the Central and Western Corridor
As the plains dry, the herds begin moving northwest through the central Serengeti toward the Grumeti River. The long rains make the grasslands rich, and this phase sees scattered groups spread across vast landscapes. Some camps close during this time due to muddy conditions.

June to Early July – Grumeti River Crossing (Western Serengeti)
Herds gather at the Grumeti River, facing one of their first major challenges: crossing crocodile-infested waters. This is a quieter phase compared to the Mara crossing, offering more intimate sightings with fewer tourists.

Mid-July to Mid-October – Mara River Crossings (Northern Serengeti)
Arguably the most dramatic part of the migration, the herds reach the northern Serengeti and cross the Mara River multiple times. These crossings are iconic, thrilling, and highly photogenic. Predators, crocodiles, and chaos make this a bucket-list experience.

November – Return South
With the onset of short rains in the south, the herds begin their journey back to the Ndutu area, completing the cycle. This transitional period still offers excellent game viewing with a backdrop of stormy skies and fresh green growth.

Best Places to Witness the Migration

  • Grumeti (Jun–Jul): River crossings, quieter atmosphere

  • Kogatende (Jul–Oct): Mara River crossings, peak drama

  • Central Serengeti (Apr–Jun): Spread-out herds, good game viewing

Important Tips

  • The exact timing varies year to year depending on rainfall.
